What do you love about your life? Seriously, think about it. Yes, right now! I want you to sit and think for a minute about the positive things you have going on. If you can’t think of anything at the moment, that’s okay. Just try, though, okay? Here’s a quick list of some of mine:
- My wonderful kids
- My supportive husband
- A job that pays the bills
- Having all of my necessities: a roof, running water, electricity, food on the table…
- The opportunity to help others
We live in a fast-paced world that is often centered around pessimism. You watch the news and see horrific things going on in the world. You check your mail and see bills piling up. Your kid come home with a black eye because some jerk at school didn’t like the style of backpack that your kid was wearing. Shit happens, right?
But what about all of the good things?
We often forget to pay attention to the awesomeness around us. In Ancient Egypt, the people would go to the temple of Hathor and speak to the priestess at their local temple, praying for specific blessings that they wanted to come their way. Each time a person would enter, they would have to recognize the Five Blessings of Hathor. On each finger, he would name one good thing in his life. If one of the blessings was no longer around (say his crops died), he would have to replace that with another blessing (his son just got married, for example). He could only ask for further blessings from the goddess if he could acknowledge what he already had.
Gratitude is a powerful thing. It can keep you focused on the positive in your life, and has even been proven to help combat depression. One way to do this is through a gratitude journal. Keep a notebook by your bed and, each morning, write down a list of things in your life for which you are grateful. It’s a wonderful way to start your day in an uplifting mindset. Just remember, the strength you have to overcome so much of the negativity in this world is, as the Egyptians did, right at your fingertips.
